The Champagne Caves

Can you believe that Champagne was actually transported in this big barrel to a contest in Paris waaaay back in the day?

Have you ever had Pommery champagne? If so, it comes from here!

In this tiny little stack of bottles there are 45707 bottles of champagne. And this is literally just a tiny stack in kilometres of cellars.

Fun fact: All of the champagne in the entire world comes from the Champagne region of France (in which Reims is the capital). If it doesn’t come from Champagne than it is sparkling wine. The government has laws regarding how Champagne can be produced and it’s a pretty specific process producing only the finest drink at the end. That is why it is so expensive! Of course buying it in Champagne is not as expensive as buying it in another country. When Max first told me this I said, “No way! There must be Champagne coming from other parts of the world!” But the truth is the truth.

Since I have moved here I have been desperately wanting to visit the cellars underneath the city. There are hundreds of kilometres of these cellars built under the region similar to underground subways except fillied with thousands millions of bottles of champagne. Having guests over this weekend was the perfect excuse for a visit.

At the end of the visit we all got to enjoy a glass of the Pommery champagne! Such a treat!

That barrel is INSANE! It’s soooo massive.
So is there moonshine champagne? You know, stuff that follows procedures but isn’t made in the proper realm? ;)

@Shakti…I think it would be called sparkling wine even if it tasted exactly the same. It’s like let’s say, for example, a profession..you can know accounting and be just as good and be called an accountant but than there are chartered accountants who had to go through a certification process to become chartered…same with champagne-it can taste the same and go through all the correct steps in processing but unless it is properly “certified” it isn’t Champagne.
